Provenance:
Roberts Gallery, Toronto
Note:
Rushing the Red Line, the namesake piece of Lennard’s 2012 solo show at Roberts Gallery, refers to the quintessential Canadian game, hockey, as a metaphor for life. Under the endless blanket of a dark night sky, two parallel bands of white and blue meet under the artist’s gentle painterly approach – representing a familiar sight to the nation, a rink. While, the vertically shaped red line, the true starlette of the piece, indicates a boundary that needs to be crossed. As Lennard states, the piece represents “being out of your comfort zone, where goals are met” – giving your all to strike at the net, the ultimate achievement and worthwhile challenge.
Born in Toronto, Lennard developed his craft under the tutelage of the American abstract painter, Nicolas Carone, while studying at the International School of Art in Italy. Having gained extensive global experiences while working abroad in Berlin, Paris, New York and Barcelona, Lennard’s travels have greatly influenced his oeuvre.
