Note:
Carol Sutton was one of Canada's most prominent abstract artists during the 1970s. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1945 and moved to Toronto, Ontario after completing her Masters of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina in 1969. She began exhibiting her work in 1966, and has now had over 32 solo exhibitions and 94 group shows. Soon after her first exhibition, she won both the Virginia Museum Fellowship and the Gold Key and Art Achievement award from the Richmond Professional Institute. Sutton's work is noted for its size, use of colour and flat picture plane and gained the attention of art critic Clement Greenberg, who began visiting her Toronto studio in 1974, where she continues to create art today.
