Note:
Born in Edinburgh, Farquharson studied at the Royal Scottish Academy followed by a period in Paris in 1880 under Carolus-Duran (also represented in this sale, Lot 371). The fluid painterliness and natural effects of Farquharson's landscape paintings, which often feature shepherds and sheep set against an evening sky, were developed and matured during the four winters (1880-1884) he spent studying in Carolus-Duran's studio in Paris. Here, he was a contemporary of John Singer Sargent, who in turn became a firm friend and admirer of the Scottish artist.
