CHÂTEAU CANON-LA-GAFFELIÈRE 2005 (1)

Saint-Émilion. Premier Grand Cru Classé B
u. vts. scraped capsule. recessed cork.

This fragrant, lush, seductive wine offers up plum, Christmas spices and crème de cassis. This dense garnet/purple wine also has loads of blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, terrific aromatics, a full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, texture, and a long, long finish. Once again, the Comte von Neipperg and his winemaking consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt have hit a home run in this vintage. This beauty is approachable, if not drinkable already, and should continue to evolve for 10-15 years. June 2015 Drink:2015-2030 WA 94

CHÂTEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL 2000 (1)

Saint-Estèphe. 2ième Cru Classé
u. bn. marked label.

the 2000 Cos d'Estournel is deep garnet in color with a touch of brick and sporting a lot of tertiary evolution on the nose. It leaps from the glass with opulent sandalwood, Chinese five spice, cigar box and leather scents over a core of prunes, baked cherries, dried mulberries and eucalyptus plus a touch of potpourri. Medium-bodied, the palate is laden with fragrant fruitcake and exotic spice layers, framed by wonderfully plush tannins and a refreshing line, finishing with an exhilarating menthol lift. November 2018 Drink to 2035 WA 97

CHÂTEAU LA GOMERIE 2005 (1)

Saint-Émilion. Grand Cru Classé
u. bn. marked label. recessed cork.

As usual, La Gomerie’s 2005 is a sexy, dense plum/purple-tinged effort. From a 7-acre, 32-year old site planted with 100% Merlot, it exhibits a sumptuous bouquet of white chocolate, roasted coffee, blackberries, black cherries, graphite, and toasty oak. This is a modern-styled, decadently rich St.-Emilion, but because of the vintage’s higher acidity and more tannic structure, this offering possesses a more classic framework than usual. A sensational wine, it should be drinkable in 3-4 years, and age beautifully for 15-20. April 2008 WA 95

CHÂTEAU LA MISSION HAUT-BRION 2001 (1)

Pessac-Léognan. Grand Cru Classé
u. bn.

Perhaps one of the more overlooked vintages in recent years, the Château La Mission Haut-Brion 2001 is one of the finest wines of the vintage. Here, one is immediately taken aback by the precision exuded by the nose: small dark cherries and orange blossom still there, perhaps the mineralité more heightened than ever. The palate displays exquisite balance with nigh on perfect acidity, demonstrating more tension, if not the dimension of the 1990 tasted alongside. This is a serious La Mission for long-term aging. Tasted June 2014. WA 96

CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE BARTON 2003 (1)

Saint-Julien. 2ième Cru Classé
u. vts. scraped label. wrinkled capsule. recessed cork.

A spectacular success, the opaque plum-colored 2003 Leoville Barton is still on the young side of its plateau of maturity. It exhibits a striking bouquet of forest floor and black currants as well as a full-bodied, exuberant, youthful style, an opaque plum/ruby color, a lot of complexity, and striking depth and richness. This is a profound, stunning effort from Anthony Barton and his team. Bravo! It should continue to provide immense pleasure for 20-30 years. August 2014 Drink: 2014-2044 WA 96

CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ 2005 (1)

Saint-Julien. 2ième Cru Classé
u. bn.

CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE-LAS-CASES 2001 (1)

Saint-Julien. 2ième Cru Classé
u. bn. scraped label & capsule.

CHÂTEAU MALESCOT ST. EXUPÉRY 2005 (1)

Margaux. 3ième Cru Classé
u. bn. marked label.

A beautiful wine, once again, from this property that has been on a superb qualitative roll for several decades. Dense ruby/purple with notes of graphite, background oak, youthful crème de cassis and blackberry fruit as well as a floral underpinning, it is medium to full-bodied, textured, rich and impressive. Still in a somewhat adolescent stage, it should hit full maturity in another 2-3 years and last at least two decades. June 2015 Drink: 2017-2037 WA 96
