SAXUM BONE ROCK SYRAH JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2002 (1 mag.)
Paso Robles.
u. 1 cm. marked label.
Looking at the 2002 James Berry Vineyard Bone Rock, it is much more classic in style, with clean blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, licorice, spice and assorted meatiness and charcuterie-like nuances showing on the nose. Full-bodied, voluptuous and layered, with a smoking texture, it, too, has some maturity, and is certainly in its drink window. It finishes clean and dry, with integrated, yet still sweet tannin. Comprised of 88% Syrah and 12% Grenache that spent 18 months in French oak, it’s a knockout Paso Robles Syrah that’s aging gracefully. June 2014 WA 95
SAXUM BONE ROCK SYRAH JAMES BERRY VINEYARD 2008 (1 mag.)
Paso Robles.
The 2008 Bone Rock comes across as quite delicate and perfumed in its expressive bouquet. Hints of smoke, mint and tar add complexity to the dark, black fruit in this beautifully balanced wine. I find a bit more complexity and nuance in the 2008 than in the 2009. I especially like the aromatic lift and freshness here. The 2008 Bone Rock is 83% Syrah (75% whole clusters), 13% Mourvedre and 4% Grenache. The wine spent 30 months in French oak and was bottled in January 2011. August 2011 WA 96
