Lot Report

Note:

This rare Beatle cover was banned from commercial release in the summer of 1966 due to the controversial subject matter of Robert Whitaker’s colour photograph showing the Beatles in white smocks surrounded by dismembered baby dolls and butcher shop cuts of meat.
According to Alan Livingstone, President of Capitol records, the cover in England was intended as “Pop art Satire”. The recall was in response to the sampling of public opinion in the United States that the cover design had negative connotations. Capitol chose to withdraw the LP and substitute it with a more generally acceptable cover photograph by Whitaker showing the 4 neatly dressed inside and draped around a trunk.
Some 750,000 albums which were pressed, packaged and shipped to the factory branches were recalled for repackaging. It is reported that none of the albums reached dealer shelves however, some may have been received by reviewers. Capitol made a painstaking effort to recall the covers to make sure they were destroyed.
During the time of release, Capitol Records manufactured records at three main pressing plants: Los Angelos, CA; Jacksonville, IL; and Scranton, PA. This particular album was manufactured at pressing plant number “6” as indicated on the back bottom right hand corner of the LP cover.
