Provenance:
Private Collection, Illinois
Note:
Likely the work of Ray Williams or his brother Wilson Williams, this important and exceptionally large model totem pole is carved in a style pioneered by the Williams family in the early 20th century. The style was first developed by their father Sam Williams in conjunction with Joseph E. Stadley, the latter being the original owner of Ye Old Curiosity Shop in Seattle.
While Sam Williams preferred carving larger, or full-scale totem poles, subsequent poles made by the family were for the most part diminutive in size.
