Provenance:

Private collection, Toronto, ON

Note:

In the autumn, Inuit hunting caribou in the traditional way would camp near crossing places of the migrating herds, hunting the animals from kayaks as they swam across the rivers. A favoured subject for the artist, Irkok elegantly portrays the partially submerged creatures panting for breath as they traverse a stretch of water. Their variegated hides are hinted at by the mottled colour of the antler from which they are carved.
