Note:
Situated slightly south west of Algonquin Park, Oxtongue Lake was visited frequently by the artist. When asked what his favourite painting place was, Casson named Oxtongue Lake as one of the few. This lot was painted from the north end of the lake near Blue Spruce Resort at the highway 60 bridge. Never needing a photograph to recall a landscape, Casson’s memory of Oxtongue Lake was engrained in his mind; “If you ask me to paint a picture of Oxtongue Lake with one of the islands, I could sit down and do it right now”.
The family of the owner of this painting once owned the property in the centre of the composition. Meeting with Casson in Toronto in the spring of 1991, the owner discussed the depicted area with the painter, Casson recalling vividly the details of the setting and recollecting many of exact details of the location which are included in the previous paragraph. During the meeting, the artist posed for a photograph with the painting.
