  • ALEXANDER YOUNG JACKSON, O.S.A., R.C.A.
Provenance:

Stevens Gallery, Montreal
Private Collection, Edmonton (acquired from the above in 1946)

Literature:

Naomi Jackson Groves, A.Y.’s Canada, Toronto/Vancouver, 1968, pages 105-106.
Dennis Reid, The Group of Seven, The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 1970, page 76, (chapter entitled The “Algonquin School” Gathers, October 1914).
Joan Murray, Tom Thomson, The Last Spring, Toronto, Oxford, 1994, page 66, figure 45 for a photograph depicting Jackson, Varley, Lismer and Tom Thomson in Algonquin Park, October 1914.

Note:

The first time that any number of the painters of the future Group of Seven sketched together in the North was October, 1914 when Jackson, Lismer, Varley and Tom Thomson all camped around Canoe Lake. According to Reid, the initiative seems to have come from Thomson.

This trip was also the only occasion when Jackson and Thomson sketched together. On October 6th, 1914 Thomson wrote to Dr. MacCallum: “Jackson & myself are having a fine time and seem to have about the same habits about camping and can always find sketching near the same place so everything is O.K. Alex has made some fine sketches here.”
