Lot Report

Literature:

Jack Shadbolt, In Search of Form, Toronto/Montreal, 1968, pages 29 and 106.

Note:

In Columns, Shadbolt presents a richly coloured architectural still-life, his column motifs blending with the surrounding European landscape. The artist describes his inspiration: “One of my very vivid impressions of Greece had been, as it was bound to be, the columns—the column heads especially. All my artistic life I had looked at books on Greece and at their many magnificent architectural photos which had stirred my romantic longings.” Here, Shadbolt fractures the architectural motif and reassembles it in a process which he describes as “surrendering the bulk and shape elements to a decorative control of overlapping planes.”
