Note:
“As a painter Miss Mount’s work is marked by a good sense of picturesque design, fluent brushwork and clean color (sic)” notes an April, 1939 Montreal Gazette article dedicated to the artist and her work. The article includes a reproduction of Late Afternoon, Glace Bay (credited as Glace Bay Harbour, C.B.) and credits the canvas as “a typical example of the port and cove scenes which interest this Montreal painter. Lost in the reproduction are the subtle qualities which mark the buildings on the high land above the waterside houses – in the original canvas a lovely blue against a golden sky. The boats in the foreground are part of the sword-fishing fleet that platforms at the end of the bowsprits from which the harpoons are being clearly shown. The craft are engine-driven, the function of the mast apart from its normal use should mechanical power fail, being to serve as a look-out in spotting the quarry at sea. This canvas was painted by Miss Mount while in Cape Breton”.
