Lot Report

Provenance:

Gift from the artist to the present owner.

Note:

Bierk’s mixed media artworks continuously underline his place within an art historical lineage by displaying his virtuosity as a painter, able to emulate, adapt and, in a sense, revivify artworks from earlier periods. In Eulogy, the artist has brought into the present day Auguste Rodin’s Age of Bronze, 1876 (a 1901 casting of which is housed in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa). The juxtaposition of the Romantic landscape enclosed within a contemporary metal surround with an image of the adjoining late-nineteenth century sculpture, incites a marvelous art historical dialogue which spans decades of artistic production.
