Note:

A master of Colour Field painting, Jean McEwen’s oil works are often linked to Impressionism in their brusque paint layers and textured canvases. Roald Nasgaard found significance in Monet’s influence on McEwen, stating that like Monet, “… [McEwen’s] vision had roots in natural observation, he expunged the representational in both space and colour, visual experience evoked alone by thick and luminescent coloured matter.”

The Paysage Inachevé series was created near the end of McEwen’s life, following the retrospective “Jean McEwen: Colour in Depth” at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Dec. 1987 – Jan. 1988).

Two comparable paintings from the series (Paysage Inachevé #11 and Paysage Inachevé #28) were included in the “Rétrospective Jean McEwen,” Galerie Simon Blais, Montreal, QC (May – June 2004).
