Note:
Samuel Cooper was a prominent preacher and patriot during the American Revolution. On October 16th, 1759, he delivered this sermon entitled "The Blessed Government and Sure Defence of the Kingdom, Under the Conquests of the Year" in response to the British victory over the French on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec one month prior.
Cooper's sermon praised the British forces for their triumph over the French, and he attributed their success to the protection of divine providence. He proclaimed that the victory was a sign of God's favour toward the British Empire and the Protestant cause, and that it served as a testament to the righteousness of their cause.
