Note:
Thomas D'Arcy McGee was an Irish-Canadian politician, writer, and journalist who played a significant role in Canadian Confederation. Born in Ireland in 1825, McGee, an Irish nationalist, immigrated to the United States in 1842. Becoming disenchanted wth American Republicanism, he reversed his views, became a fierce monarchist and settled in Canada where he became a prominent advocate for Canadian unity and confederation, helping to draft the British North America Act of 1867.
As a member of Parliament, he championed issues such as immigration, education, and free trade. McGee was also a prolific writer, penning poetry, political essays, and a history of Ireland. In 1868 he was assasinated by a Fenian who opposed his political views. McGee is remembered as one of Canada's founding fathers, whose vision and advocacy helped to shape the nation.
