Maud Lewis (1903-1970), Canadian
Additional Images
Provenance:
Private Collection, British Columbia
Note:
This view of rural Nova Scotia with the horse-drawn carriage, steeple, and surrounding houses is one of Lewis’ most beloved and revisited snow scene images. It was a common practice for Lewis to revisit the same vista in her painting and she would often revert back to familiar imagery that she remembered from her childhood, “I put the same things in, I never change. Same colours and same designs. I don’t copy much, I guess my work up.”[1] This work is testament to Lewis’ talent for colour and composition. The carriage and snow-covered road are framed by the trees and surrounding village. The palette is simple and well-balanced with the bright red, yellow and greens contrasting against the white snow and clouds.
