Note:
This important work by David Bolduc was previously housed in the Cineplex Odeon collection (Toronto) and is featured by curator David Burnett in Cineplex Odeon, the First Ten Years: A Celebration of Contemporary Canadian Art. Burnett writes,
Madison Blues wittily and ingeniously establishes compositional rhythm in a work sited in a relatively narrow space where it is most commonly viewed from the side. This painting is in five sections, each carrying central emblematic images surrounded by crosses and set in fields of different colours and textures. The impact of each image is played against a sense of panorama. [1]
The panorama effect that Burnett describes is visually achieved by a large central panel flanked by increasingly smaller panels as they move further away from the centre. This play with optics is a theme that runs throughout many of Bolduc’s acrylic and collage works.
