Note:
In a 2001 interview, Cohen recalls: “In 1975 I photographed a swimming pool at a resort in the Poconos, the honeymoon capital of the USA. The pool had mould oozing down the wall, even though it was supposed to be a luxury hotel, and similar stains appear in some of my later pictures of pools. I hadn't thought of the mould as the primary theme until I saw it again in a different context with something else in mind.” [1]
Cohen’s practice has long centred around photographing “found environments” – empty spaces bereft of human presence, yet purpose-built for human needs. Cohen leaves most of the interpretation of these spaces to the viewer, asking them to project their own experiences — and anxieties — of place.
