Note:
Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis’s joyful scenes of a simple life have captured the hearts of collectors and art enthusiasts in Canada and abroad. She has become one of the most sought-after Canadian artists in recent years.
Horse and Buggy on Snowy Road is a primary example of the imagery Lewis is best-known for: the horse-drawn carriage heading down a snow-covered road, surrounded by red and yellow houses. It was painted at a time when she was gaining national attention, in 1965 Lewis was featured in a CBC broadcast and a Star Weekly article, which expedited her rise to fame, as well as comparisons drawn between her and American folk artist, Anna Mary Robertson Moses (Grandma Moses).
This lot is accompanied by a copy of The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis", Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, 1996.
