Provenance:
Private Collection, Toronto, ON
Note:
As late as the early 2000s, artists Roy and Randy Henry worked in Ontario in close proximity to the artist Manasie Akpaliapik following his move from Ikpiarjuk (Arctic Bay) after 1980. Benefiting from mutual artistic influence, Roy and Randy adopted the use of whalebone in their artwork, as Manasie had adopted the use of red catlinite, a stone absent in Ikpiarjuk, but of strong traditional importance to the Haudenosaunee and many other North American Indigenous peoples. The present sculpture speaks to notions of cross cultural Indigeneity for which fellow artist Manasie Akpaliapik is already well known.
