Provenance:
Private Collection, Cedarhurst, NY
Note:
Sculpted while in residence at the Mountain Sanatorium (now Chedoke Campus) in Hamilton, Ontario, this early standing figure dates circa 1958. Although several well-known artists completed work at the Mountain Sanatorium including Henry Evaluardjuk, Kenojuak Ashevak, and Simon Pov, many of the artworks made there are unsigned and remain unidentified.
The present work by an unknown Pannirtuq (Pangnirtung) artist is distinguished by a lightly stylized form, contrasting surface treatment and a refined, carefully executed face. The scale is notably large for a Mountain Sanatorium work.
Artworks made by patients at the Mountain Sanatorium were the subject of a 2017 exhibition at the Art Gallery of Hamilton titled “Carving Home: The Chedoke Collection of Inuit Art.”
