Note:
David Robinson’s sculpture Equestrian cuts a forlorn figure as its constituents traipse across space. Equine and human are bound up in one another in every sense of the phrase, and their relationship to one another draws the artist to the subject. He describes his interest in equestrian monuments as predating his knowledge of their imperial associations; a fascination that is “full of narrative, free of history.” Robinson’s sculpture is one of an edition of six, and is a small version of a larger work entitled Equestrian Monument. The latter was installed at the Yaletown/Roundhouse Skytrain Station in Downtown Vancouver, where it stood during the 2010 Olympics. In both its miniature and monumental iterations, the work invites contemplation of the larger metaphysical questions that occupy the sculptor’s imagination.
