Note:
Joe David is one of the major instigators of the revival of Nuu-Chah-Nulth traditions in art. He is identified with the revival of the contemporary Northwest Coast art movement. This 'North Wind' mask, dating back to 1972 is an exemplary example of Nuu-Chah-Nulth mask making with its distinctive and powerful interpretation of the human form. The mask is carved in deep relief, and when viewed side on, the viewer gets the full force of the gestural interpretation of wind. The carving and vivid blue that is typical of Nuu-Chah-Nulth traditional masks, creates movement and powerful visual and spiritual impact.
His work is collected worldwide and has pieces in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Anthropology in British Columbia.
