Note:
This box was presented in 1952 to the Canadian Governor General, the Rt. Hon. Vincent Massey, during his visit to Prince Rupert, by Chief Gitxun (also pronounced “Giatkthon”). The position of Chief Gitxun was then held by Mr. Arthur Edward Nelson (Sim'oogit Gitxun).
Called a “Gal-inxhl", the box is used for either holding valued Regalia, Head Dress, or other valuable items that may belong to a Chief. According to Elder Alvin Nelson, an Elder of the Nisga’a People’s village of Gingolx (Kincolith, British Columbia), Chief Gitxun hired a renowned Nisga'a carver to make this masterpiece; as according to him it is a great work of art.
Elder Alvin Nelson stated that Chief Gitxun commissioned his eldest son, Arthur Luke Nelson, an artist, to carve this box, and that the box features the "People of the Salmon on the sides with Watchmen".
