Note:
Simon Hughes is a visual artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba whose art practice encompasses drawing, painting, video, and public art. Much of his work takes landscape as its starting point and involves non-traditional modes of representing the land and its conflicting uses and histories. His most recent studio work, focused on painting and drawing, is concerned with the intersection of landscape painting, Modernist art history, Canadian regionalism, and abstraction. This body of work revolves around the image of the mountain, taking the form of acrylic paintings which incorporate collaged prints from old books and magazines into imaginary constructions and Surrealist landscapes. In earlier work, he developed images of icebergs, the northern lights and the built environment using watercolour, architectural drafting and his investigations into colour theory.
Hughes received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba in 1996. In 2007, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2010 from the University of California, Irvine.
He has had solo exhibitions with Division Gallery in Montreal and Toronto, and with Julie Saul Gallery in New York City; he has also participated in multiple group exhibitions in museums, including the Alberta Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Winnipeg Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada. A mid-career survey exhibition of Simon Hughes’ work was mounted at the Peel Art Gallery in Brampton, Ontario in 2020. He has produced a number of murals as commissioned art works at the Windsor Park Library in Winnipeg and a new bus terminal in Toronto.
Hughes is represented by Blouin/Division in Montreal.
