Provenance:

MacConnal-Mason & Son Ltd., London, England gallery label, verso;
Sotheby's New York, NY, July 9, 1999, Lot 571;
Christopher Wood, London UK;
Estate Collection, Ontario

Exhibited:

This was the artist's first painting exhibited at The Royal Academy, London, UK. The relevant page from the catalogue of "The Exhibition of the Royal Academy", 1880, the 112th, entry no. 79, p.7 is adhered to the verso.

Note:

The handwritten note on the verso, written to the unidentified collector that purchased this work reads: "The "Goods and Chattels" I have selected as those most likely to be amongst the first to be sacrificed to the Pawnbrokers. I, Jessica Ellen Hayllar, am the eldest daughter of the well known artist Mr. James Hayllar. The picture you have done me the honour to purchase is the first I have exhibited in the Royal Academy. I had two pictures in the Dudley Gallery last year which were placed on the line of sight & were most favorably noticed." signed "J.E.H.".

Along with another aged typeset document, headed "Gallery No. 1" which appears to be a loose page from the catalogue of works which were exhibited in The Royal Academy.
