Provenance:
Masters Gallery Ltd., Calgary.
Literature:
Paul Duval, A.J. Casson, His Life & Works/A Tribute, Toronto, 1980, n.p.
Note:
Duval writes that in August of 1919 Casson had his first opportunity to paint in northern Ontario, when he was invited to spend two weeks at the general store of his uncle, James Hardy, in the isolated settlement of Cache Bay on Lake Nipissing. According to Casson, “It was the first time I had ever seen the north country which I had heard so much about from some of the artists I was beginning to meet...For me, it was a revelation and I painted every day while I was there.” His painting time was divided between watercolour and small oils and Casson remembers them as being among the best things he did before the 1920s.
