Note:
Though born in Montreal, it was in Florence, Italy where Lefkowitz would learn the “lost wax” sculpting technique that would anchor her celebrated career. Dating back to the 3rdcentury BC, this technique involves a duplicate metal sculpture being cast from an original wax version created by the artist. Molten metal is poured into a mold constructed around the wax model: the metal melts the wax, which drains away—and is thus ‘lost.’
Lefkowitz’s Florentine period culminated in her winning the Porcellino Award for the best resident foreign artist. Acclaim followed, as did commissions—notable ones included an 80-figure interpretation of Dante’s Divine Comedy, as well as the Fathers of Confederation, 90 separate bronze pieces commissioned by the Canadian Government to commemorate the 1967 Centennial. Lefkowitz returned to Montreal in 1981, where she worked until her death in 1987.
