Note:
Produced during his Hinges period (1972-1979), this study marks a return to Sorel Etrog’s interest in using solid bronze to evoke an organic form. This tension between hard and soft, organic and mechanical are central themes that can be seen throughout Etrog’s oeuvre as he explores the human experience. The hinge also conveys the interconnectedness between the mother and child.
The hinge was a departure from Etrog’s boldly coloured screws and bolts. Returning to a monochrome palette, it was during a vacation in Israel that Etrog began sketching organic forms connected by hinges, “The hinge started to obsess me and so I adopted it.”[1] This exploration has produced some of Etrog’s most recognized and acclaimed works.
